Hon. Michael Olakanwi Okpabi is a respected community leader, grassroots politician, and entrepreneur whose public life has been defined by service, discipline, and commitment to the development of Ogale and Eleme at large.
Early Life and Background
Hon. Michael Olakanwi Okpabi was born in 1967 in Ogale, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. He is the son of Elder Paul Gomba Okpabi and Mrs. Grace Osila Mgbere Okpabi, a family rooted in strong moral values, community responsibility, and service.
Education
He began his formal education at State Primary School, Ogale, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) in 1980. His secondary education started at Command Day Secondary School, Ikeja Cantonment, Lagos State, and was completed at Comprehensive High School, Alesa Eleme, where he earned his West African School Certificate (WASC) in 1986.
In pursuit of higher education and professional advancement, he attended Abia State University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accountancy in 2002.
Political and Public Service Career
Hon. Okpabi’s entry into elective politics came in 2004, when he was elected Councillor representing Ogale Ward, a position he held until 2007. During this period, he distinguished himself through effective representation and legislative leadership.
He served as Chief Whip of the Eleme Legislative Assembly in 2004, and later rose to become the Leader of the Eleme Legislative Assembly, a role that placed him at the centre of local legislative governance and policy coordination. In addition to his legislative responsibilities, he also served at different times as Acting Youth Leader and Acting Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC) in Ogale, further demonstrating his versatility in community leadership.
Traditional Leadership and Community Roles
Beyond politics, Hon. Michael Olakanwi Okpabi holds a recognized place within Eleme’s traditional institution. He is the Compound Chief of Okpabi Compound and a member of the Ejii Council of Chiefs. In 2025, he was formally inducted into the Eleme Council of Chiefs by His Royal Majesty, King Philip Osaro Obele, Oneh-eh Eleme XI, an honour that underscores his standing and acceptance within the traditional hierarchy.
Business and Private Life
Hon. Okpabi is an entrepreneur and currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Mc Resorts and Hotel, contributing to local economic activity and employment generation.
He is married to Mrs. Progress Michael Okpabi, and their marriage is blessed with children.
Sports and Community Development
A lover of sports, Hon. Okpabi has maintained a lifelong passion for football, a habit he developed from his youth. As a Councillor, he demonstrated practical support for youth development by donating a trophy used for the Ogale Unity Cup Football Tournament, an initiative that promoted unity, talent discovery, and social cohesion within the community.
