Ajuri Obari Ngelale is a politician and broadcast journalist from Nigeria who was President Bola Tinubu's spokesperson. Previously, he was a co-principal spokesperson for the Bola Tinubu presidential campaign council for the 2023 Nigerian general election and a presidential senior special assistant on public affairs to former president Muhammadu Buhar.

BIRTH

Ajury Obari Ngelale, Chief, Hon, was born in Platteville, Wisconsin, to German-American mother Diane, who worked as the social welfare director for the Rivers State Government under Governor Melford Okilo, and Nigerian father Chief Precious Osaro Ngelale of Eleme descent.

EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Ajury Obari Ngelale graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, in the United States, with a bachelor's degree in political science and history. In 2011, he went back to Nigeria to serve in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), which is a one-year required program.


CAREER

During his one-year national service, Ajuri Obari Ngelale began his journalism career as a youth corps member at Africa Independent Television. He was hired by AIT as an investigative reporter after finishing his national service, and from 2011 to 2016, he worked as a news editor, producer, and presenter. State of the Nation (2012) and Diary from the Delta (2016), two highly regarded public affairs documentary series, were created by him at AIT.

After leaving AIT in 2016, he joined Channels Television, where he co-anchored the well-liked public policy discussion show Sunrise Daily. He also produced and presented Africa's Future Leaders, a documentary that followed young African leaders as they lifted up underprivileged communities through their own initiative, in collaboration with the US Government's Mandela Washington Fellowship.

He left Channels TV in 2019 to work as the chief media content producer for the Buhari/Osinbajo presidential campaign group, which was part of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Next Level Presidential Campaign for President Muhammadu Buhari's reelection. Ngelale was named President Buhari's senior special adviser on public affairs after their 2019 election victory, and he held this role until Buhari's departure in 2023.

He was appointed co-principal spokesperson for the Tinubu-Shettima Presidential campaign organization in October 2022.

Ngelale was appointed President Bola Tinubu's official spokesperson on July 31, 2023. He was appointed the Federal Republic of Nigeria's first special presidential envoy on climate action by President Tinubu on May 19, 2024. In addition, he was named secretary of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions, which was presided over by President Tinubu, and chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen, Nigeria's first green industrial zone.

Ngelale left his position as President Tinubu's spokesperson indefinitely on September 7, 2024, to take care of health concerns that affected his close relatives.
