Prof. Arthur Nwafor

Professor Arthur Nwafor Chuemere was a distinguished academic, medical scientist, administrator, and public servant whose life exemplified resilience, scholarship, faith, and service. Renowned for his contributions to physiology, biomedical sciences, and university administration, he left an enduring legacy in Nigerian higher education and public life.

Early Life and Family Background

Professor Arthur Nwafor Chuemere was born in 1955 into the family of Late Emere Titus Chu Nwafor and Late Emere-Owa Comfort Yeye Chu Nwafor of Okwubemere, Acharama Clan, Alode Community, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria.

He was raised in a disciplined military-Christian household that nurtured courage, integrity, perseverance, and a deep reverence for God. His father, a World War II veteran who deeply valued education, inspired his early commitment to learning and self-development.

Early Education and Formative Experiences

Arthur began his formal education at the Seventh-day Adventist Primary School, Nichia Eleme (now State Primary School, Alesa). He proceeded to Ascension High School, Eleme, where his secondary education was interrupted by the Nigerian Civil War.

During the war, he was conscripted into the Biafran Army as a child soldier, an experience that profoundly shaped his resilience and sense of duty. After the war ended in 1970, he resumed his education at St. Pius Secondary School, Bodo, Ogoni, often trekking long distances barefoot through forests to attend school.

At St. Pius Secondary School, he distinguished himself academically and morally, serving as Dormitory and Dining Hall Prefect. It was also during this period that he published his first article, “The Power House,” signalling his early intellectual promise.

Early Career and Public Service

Between 1972 and 1975, Professor Chuemere worked with the Rivers State Government as an X-ray Attendant and Clerical Officer at Okrika General Hospital. This exposure to healthcare practice laid the foundation for his lifelong engagement with medical and biomedical sciences.

Despite the loss of his father in 1973, he remained steadfast in his academic pursuits, drawing strength from faith, discipline, and an unwavering belief in education as a transformative force.

Higher Education and Academic Training

With the support of the Rivers State Government, Arthur travelled to the United Kingdom to pursue higher education, marking a decisive turning point in his life.

His academic training included:

  • University of Wales, College of CardiffPh.D. in Physiology and Biophysics, 1980–1984

His doctoral research, conducted under Professor W. T. Coakley and supported by the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Wellcome Trust, London, made significant contributions to the understanding of erythrocyte membrane dynamics. His work examined the effects of ultrasound, scanning devices, and microwave-generated heat on red blood cell viability, with important implications for medical diagnostics and blood safety.

In 1984, Professor David Lloyd, Head of Microbiology at University College, Cardiff, commended his diligence, intellectual depth, and promise as a scholar and teacher—qualities that defined his academic career.
