Barrister Isaac Olungwe Kamalu is a distinguished lawyer, politician, and public administrator whose career reflects uncommon integrity, competence, and loyalty. Over the years, he has served the Rivers State Government and the people of Eleme with deep commitment and a results-oriented approach to leadership.
Early Life
He hails from Alode community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. The only son and second child of his mother, Barr. Kamalu grew up in a closely knit polygamous family where love and unity prevailed. His mother’s selfless sacrifices and determination to see him succeed shaped his values of discipline, humility, and compassion: virtues that continue to define his personal and professional life.
Education
A product of sound education and diligence, Barr. Kamalu studied Law, earning the professional qualifications that equipped him for a successful career both in the courtroom and in public administration. His training in legal advocacy and governance would later serve as a solid foundation for his contributions to the state and his community.
Work Experience
Before venturing into politics, Barr. Kamalu co-founded the law firm Kamalu & Wodu (Esq.), where he earned a reputation for integrity and professional excellence. He handled several notable cases, including the legal battle that secured the release of Barr. Ledum Mittee, and the case that successfully overturned the impeachment of Hon. Peremobowei Ebebi, former Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State. His legal practice reflected his belief in justice and fairness for all.
Political Experience and Achievements
Barr. Kamalu’s political career began in 2007 when he was elected Member, Rivers State House of Assembly representing Eleme Constituency. Within his first term, he rose to the position of Chief Whip, distinguishing himself through diligence, intelligence, and teamwork. His tenure was marked by the completion of numerous constituency projects, many of which he continued even after leaving office.
In 2015, he was appointed Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, and later, in 2019, Commissioner for Finance, both under a PDP-led administration. In these roles, he contributed significantly to the formulation and implementation of the state’s fiscal and economic policies. His dedication, transparency, and loyalty to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) earned him wide respect across political circles.
Outstanding Contribution to Eleme
A defining moment in his service to Eleme came during the boundary adjustment dispute between Eleme, Okrika, and Ogubolo Local Government Areas. Barr. Kamalu stood fearlessly in defense of Eleme’s interest, offering his legal expertise without financial reward. Working alongside respected Eleme leaders such as Late Justice Wai Ogosu, HRH Chief J.D. Osaronu, and Elder Gomba Osarollor, he helped safeguard Eleme’s territorial integrity. This act of patriotism remains one of his enduring legacies.
Private Life
Barr. Kamalu is a humble, family-oriented man guided by faith and a deep sense of duty. Despite his many achievements, he remains approachable and respectful, especially towards his mother whose sacrifices continue to inspire his service to humanity. In every role he has played: lawyer, legislator, or commissioner, Barr. Isaac Olungwe Kamalu stands as a model of integrity and steadfast leadership for the people of Eleme and Rivers State.
