HRM Samuel Oluka Ejire
1929-2019

His Royal Majesty Dr. Samuel Oluka Ejire, the Tenth Oneh-Eh Eleme, served as the paramount ruler and custodian of Eleme’s cultural, spiritual, and ancestral heritage. Widely admired for his calm strength, depth of wisdom, and unifying leadership, he presided over Eleme during a period of remarkable social and economic transformation.

His character and reign were best captured by Chief Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, who as Governor of Rivers State, in his tribute of January 9, 2019, described him as “a very peaceful man… one whose temperament brought harmony to a kingdom blessed by God.”

Early Life and Origin

Born on 16 November 1929 into the family of Michael Ejire Awala of Agbonchia, the young Samuel Oluka Ejire was marked early for greatness. The renowned seer, Onungwe Nkpaate, prophesied in his childhood that he would one day become king: a prediction that would come to pass many decades later.

He began life in Agbonchia, one of the historic clans of Eleme, growing within a community rich in customs, ancestral values, and strong communal identity.

As proprietor of one of Eleme’s earliest photography establishments, he documented historic moments, family legacies, and community life across the region.

His years behind the lens shaped his disciplined worldview and gave him a unique perspective on the lives and stories of his people.

On 23 March 2002, following the passing of HRM Ngei A. O. Ngei (Oneh-Eh Eleme IX), he was installed Oneh-Eh Eleme X, fulfilling the prophecy spoken over him as a child.
