Olaka Johnson Nwogu, Dr, Senator

Sen. Olaka Nwogu PhD

Senator (Dr.) Olaka Johnson Nwogu stands as one of the most visible, articulate, and enduring political figures to emerge from Eleme in the contemporary democratic era. A businessman, politician, administrator, and legislator, his political journey spans over three decades and reflects courage, resilience, and an uncommon understanding of grassroots politics.

Early Life and Education

Born on 26 January 1965, Olaka Nwogu displayed brilliance and confidence from a young age. He had part of his early education in Lagos but frequently returned to Eleme, as his father, Chief Johnson Olaka Nwogu, insisted that his children must maintain strong ties with their roots. This ensured that Olaka’s formative years were shaped both by cosmopolitan exposure and Eleme cultural grounding.

He attended Stella Maris College, Port Harcourt, graduating at the remarkable age of 15. He later proceeded to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (now Rivers State University) for his undergraduate programme, where he became active in student politics.

Showing unusual discipline and ambition, Olaka enrolled for a Master of Business Administration (MBA) immediately after graduation, combining his studies with commercial ventures, including vending and procurement services. One of his earliest business encounters at the Port Harcourt Refinery brought him to the attention of the late Engr. Paul Obelley, who later became instrumental in launching his political career.

In 2021, Olaka crowned his academic pursuits with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, further strengthening his intellectual and leadership profile.

Entry into Politics

Olaka's rise in politics began in the early 1990s. As Rivers State prepared for the 1991 local government and state elections, he was encouraged by Engr. Paul Obelley and other political actors to contest.

At 26 years old, he was elected Chairman of Tai–Eleme Local Government Area and inaugurated in January 1992. His tenure was widely celebrated, earning him respect across the old Rivers State. During this period, he also served as Coordinator of the Hope ’93 Campaign Organization of Chief M.K.O. Abiola in Rivers State.

National Political Career: Member, House of Representatives (1999–2011). With the return of democracy in 1999, Olaka was elected to represent the Tai–Eleme–Oyigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He was re-elected in 2003 and again in 2007, serving a total of twelve years.

In the National Assembly, he earned a reputation as: a vocal and articulate legislator; a bridge between Eleme, Ogoni, and other ethnic blocs; a strong advocate of grassroots mobilization; and a political stabilizer in the Eleme–Tai–Oyigbo axis.

Despite his active political life, Olaka continued to build private ventures in hospitality and infrastructure development, including the Landmark Hotel in D-Line, Port Harcourt, and Hinterland Construction Company in Eleme.

Senatorial Bid

In March 2015, Olaka contested the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat and won with 408,353 votes, defeating the incumbent, Senator Magnus Abe of the APC. His victory, however, was later overturned at the Court of Appeal in Abuja during the post-election tribunal cases in an election cycle marked by statewide tensions.

He returned for the 2016 rerun elections as the PDP candidate, remaining a key figure in one of the most competitive and publicized electoral contests in Rivers State history.

Business and Public Service

Beyond politics, Senator Olaka Nwogu is an entrepreneur with investments in: hospitality (Landmark Hotel), construction and infrastructure (Hinterland Construction Company)

His businesses have provided employment for youths and contributed to the economic growth of Eleme and Port Harcourt.

Public Reputation

Senator Olaka Nwogu is widely regarded as: articulate and intellectually grounded; approachable to youth and grassroots groups,; a strategist with deep knowledge of Rivers political dynamics, and a major power-broker in Eleme’s modern political evolution.

He maintains strong relationships with traditional rulers, community leaders, women groups, youth movements, and political blocs across Eleme, Tai, and Oyigbo.

Continuing Influence

Though he currently holds no elective office, Senator Nwogu remains: a leading stakeholder of the PDP in Rivers State; an influential figure in Eleme and Ogoni political alignments; active in consultations and regional political engagements; and a symbol of Eleme’s political visibility at the state and national levels.

Legacy and Outlook

Senator (Dr.) Olaka Johnson Nwogu remains one of Eleme’s most accomplished political exports. His journey from a 26-year-old council chairman to a three-term federal lawmaker, senator, businessman, and academic, positioned him as a key contributor to the political awakening and representation of Eleme people in Nigeria.
