Professor Ndowa Sunday Lale is a distinguished Nigerian academic, administrator, and publisher. He rose to national prominence as the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, where his leadership left an indelible mark on higher education in Nigeria. A respected scholar of Agricultural Entomology, he has combined a career in research and teaching with an enviable record of service in academic administration and community development.

Birth

Ndowa Sunday Lale hails from Ebubu in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. Rooted in Eleme heritage and values, his life journey reflects both the resilience of his people and the opportunities provided by education and hard work.


Education

Professor Lale began his educational journey at Ascension High School, Ogale, before proceeding to the Federal Government College, Port Harcourt. He distinguished himself early, excelling in the sciences. He later earned his Advanced Level General Certificate of Education in Biology, Chemistry, and Geography. His pursuit of excellence led him to the University of Maiduguri, where he graduated with First Class Honours in Agriculture (Crop Science). Driven by a quest for deeper knowledge, he obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural Entomology from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom.

Work Experience

Lale’s academic career began in 1981 at the Advanced Teachers’ College, Katsina-Ala, before he joined the University of Port Harcourt as a Lecturer. Over the years, he held positions at the University of Maiduguri, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Entomology, and later returned to the University of Port Harcourt to continue his teaching and research.

Beyond the classroom, he contributed significantly to academic administration. He served as Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Chairman of several university committees, Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Entomology, and consultant to development agencies. His leadership extended to the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, where he served in various capacities, and to national platforms such as the TETFUND Screening and Monitoring Committee. In July 2015, he assumed office as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, a position in which he served with distinction.

Achievements

As Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lale prioritized academic discipline, infrastructural expansion, and staff and student welfare. Under his leadership, lectures commenced promptly at the start of semesters, while a Quality Assurance and Control Unit monitored academic standards. He introduced certificate verification processes for staff and strengthened governance systems.

His administration completed numerous infrastructural projects, including lecture halls, office complexes, student hostels, staff housing, and welfare facilities. He also oversaw the refurbishment of major university landmarks and secured new projects such as the proposed Convocation Arena.

In sports, his leadership saw the University of Port Harcourt successfully host and win the 14th edition of the West African University Games, further cementing the institution’s reputation as a powerhouse in athletics.

Beyond his role as Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lale has held leadership positions in professional and community organizations, including the African Sustainable Development Network and the Eleme Development Authority.

Private Life

Professor Lale is married and blessed with children. Despite his demanding career, he maintains strong ties to his roots in Eleme, where he continues to play an influential role in community development. His life embodies the Eleme values of service, integrity, and hard work, making him an outstanding role model for the younger generation.
