Pastor Isaac Nwafor Kattey (NHNR) was a distinguished educationist, pastor, writer, and community leader from Eleme, Rivers State. Known for his passion for knowledge and his devotion to service, he combined a long teaching career with religious commitment and left behind a legacy that continues to inspire.

Birth

Isaac Nwafor Kattey was born on 28th August 1951 at Alode, Eleme Local Government Area, Rivers State, to the family of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gomba Nwafor.

Education

He began his education at the Seventh-Day Adventist School, Nchia, Eleme (1956–1963), where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate. He proceeded to the Government Teachers Training College, Ahoada (1974–1978), earning the Teachers Grade II Certificate.
In further pursuit of academic excellence, he attended the Federal College of Education, Katsina (1984–1986), before enrolling at the University of Port Harcourt, where he earned a B.A (Ed) in 1992 and an M.A in 2002. He later advanced to doctoral research in the same institution.

Work Experience

Pastor Kattey began his teaching career at State Primary School, Agbonchia (1978–1982) and later served at State Primary School, Alode (1983). He taught at Government Secondary School, Nonwa Gbam (1987–1991) and Comprehensive High School, Alesa, Eleme (1992–1995).
He was also posted to Government Secondary School, Oyigbo (1997–2003; 2008–2011), GSS Umugbia (2004–2005), and CHS Alesa, Eleme (2006–2007). Beyond classroom teaching, he established the Eleme Study Centre of the National Teachers Institute (NTI) in 2002, producing over 800 graduates and promoting educational development in Eleme and environs. He also served as Coordinator of the Mathematical Association of Nigeria (MAN), Eleme Chapter.

Achievements and Awards

Pastor Kattey received recognition for his contributions to education and national development. These include:

  • Golden Service Award as Best Classroom Teacher in Rivers State, presented by Human and Natural Resources, Abuja, on 11th October 2008.
  • Diamond Award for National Development.

Publications

He authored several works that supported both teachers and students, including:

  • The Last Minute Revision Guide on English Language for JSCE, SSCE, and JAMB
  • A Brief History of the Hebrews (1986)
  • Improving Relations Between Teachers and Communities in Rural Areas in Rivers State (1991)
  • The Advent of Christianity and Its Impact on the Cultural Heritage of the Eleme People, Rivers State, Nigeria (1910–2004) (2005).

Private Life

Pastor Kattey was married to Lucy Dada Obele Chu of Ejii Community, Ogale, Eleme. Their marriage was blessed with ten children, two of whom predeceased him. He was a devoted family man who instilled discipline, responsibility, and the fear of God in his children.

He was also a dedicated Christian. A member of The True Church of God in his early years, he served as General Choir Master in Rivers State before joining the Deeper Life Bible Church in the 1990s, where he rose to the position of Zonal Leader and later Eleme Language Pastor.

Death

Pastor Isaac Nwafor Kattey passed away on Tuesday, 8th November 2016 after a brief illness. He was laid to rest on 25th March 2017.
