Hon. Engr. Igwe Aforji Obey, PhD, FNSE, is a distinguished Nigerian lawmaker, engineer, and community leader. A two-term Member of the Rivers State House of Assembly representing Eleme Constituency, he is widely recognized as a transformative leader committed to equity, justice, sustainable community development, and effective legislation. His leadership philosophy is rooted in accessibility, humility, and impactful service. With a professional background in engineering and community relations, he has combined technical expertise with political will to deliver tangible results for his people and Rivers State at large.
Birth
Hon. Igwe Aforji Obey was born in Rivers State, Nigeria, into a family that valued education, discipline, and community service. His early upbringing in Eleme nurtured his commitment to hard work, selflessness, and the pursuit of excellence—qualities that have defined his professional and political journey.
Education
He began his early education at State School, Aleto Eleme, before proceeding to Country Grammar School, Ikwerre/Etche for his secondary education. Driven by an enduring quest for knowledge, he obtained a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt.
He further earned a Diploma in Human Resources Development from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, and an MBA in Business Administration from the University of Port Harcourt. His academic pursuit culminated in a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Human Resource Management from the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education.
He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), a professional recognition that underscores his technical competence and professional contributions.
Work Experience
Before venturing fully into politics, Hon. Obey built a solid career in engineering and corporate relations. He served as Community Relations Officer at Indorama Petrochemicals Ltd, Rivers State, where he pioneered strategic community engagement initiatives. His efforts empowered over 1,500 youths through job placements, vocational training, and business opportunities. He also facilitated the signing of six Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the company and host communities, ensuring mutual trust and development.
Political Life and Achievements
Hon. Igwe Aforji Obey was elected as a Member of the Rivers State House of Assembly (RSHA) for Eleme Constituency, where he has distinguished himself through effective legislation and constituency development.
First term in the house (2019–2023), he orchestrated major employment drives, secured placements in oil and gas/logistics, facilitated bursary schemes for students, empowered widows with startup funds, and resettled the displaced Ekporo community—restoring dignity and hope to many families.
Other notable achievements include:
- Chairman, Ad-Hoc Committee on Appropriation, where he played a pivotal role in reviewing and passing the 2020 Rivers State Supplementary Budget, with special attention to the landmark Port Harcourt Ring Road Project.
- Sponsored and supported bills with far-reaching impact, including the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Bill (2024).
- Conducted oversight visits to educational institutions, such as Kalabari Girls High School, following sponsored education bills.
- Championed major constituency projects, including the Ekporo Ultra-Modern Town Hall, the Aleto Ultra-Modern Town Hall, and the Nyesom Wike Ultra-Modern Town Hall in Ekporo.
- Facilitated empowerment initiatives—distributing sewing machines, hair dryers, food items, livestock, and cash support.
- Provided boreholes with overhead storage, bursary funds for students, and skills acquisition programs in welding, electrical installation, and other trades.
His pragmatic leadership has positioned him as one of the most effective lawmakers in Rivers State.

He is happily married to Mrs. Enitan igwe Aforji and his marriage is blessed with 4 children
